The Son of God is lifted up;
Look hither and be healed
And on your brow receive His mark;
Unto new life be sealed.
He is enthroned in splendor there
So we might know no loss;
The King of Glory reigning
Through the power of the cross.
The cross displays all holiness
For those with eyes to see;
The Master empties out Himself
Of all authority.
Because our slavish form He took,
Obedient to the end,
His name is now exalted
As our God and as our friend.
The tree of life denied to us
Through Adam’s garden sin
Springs forth again at Golgotha;
Behold the fruit therein!
Where He who knew no mortal sin
Is ransomed unto death
That Eve’s descendants might receive
Again God’s holy breath.
So teach us, Lord, to bear our cross,
Deny ourselves and live,
Through sacrifice show to the world
The love you died to give,
That through our faith, however small,
Your name is glorified
And all humanity be drawn unto the crucified.
Teach us to look upon the cross
Where God so loved the world
That now the banners of our hearts
For battle be unfurled.
So we might now the gates of hell
Assail with perfect peace,
And set the captives there now free,
The prisoners grant release.
The Son of God is lifted up;
We march beneath His cross.
Because the victory is His,
We fear no death or loss.
Now prove us in the battle, Lord,
And burn away our dross
That we may shine, reflecting
All the glory of your cross!
