Described as “wonderful,” “inspiring,” and “the best melodies of this kind I have heard for a long time,” this music is designed for congregations who use contemporary worship music but would like the theological depth of the traditional Western liturgy.  Able to be used in parts or as a whole, it is designed to bring better spiritual formation to the life of a congregation by providing a structural backbone for preaching and other music in a contemporary worship context.

Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi is an ancient adage of the Church that translates roughly to “the rule of prayer is the rule of faith” or, to put it in a more modern idiom, “as you pray, so you believe.”  The phrase acknowledges the reality of how profoundly prayer set to music in a church service affects us; long after the words of sermons are forgotten, the words of songs we sing–especially in worship–continue to form us as people.  Notably, the phrase came out of the Church’s experience at precisely the moment it was facing not only heresy within, but persecution from without; a time much like our own.

Here you will find music that brings together the ancient faith and liturgy of the Church with contemporary musical vocabularies.  It is designed to be led by a contemporary worship band so that the depth of the Church’s historic liturgy may be added to the energy and enthusiasm of modern worship music.

Recordings of the LOLeC liturgy are for practice purposes and designed so that non-music-readers can learn the material.  The stereo image is separated with the full band in one ear and the part to be learned (bass, rhythm guitar, piano, etc.) in the other.  By turning off one speaker or earphone, the musician may learn the part in question or play along with a band track for practice.

Texts are designed for use with the Lutheran Book of Worship or Book of Common Prayer, but may be easily adapted for Missouri Synod, Methodist, and Roman Catholic usage.  They are drawn from the English Language Liturgical Consultation (http://englishtexts.org), all rights reserved.
